  1. Bach, Johann Sebastian 1685-1750. German
  2. composer. His appointments included positions
  3. at the courts of Weimar and Anhalt-Kothen,
  4. and from 1723 until his death, he was musical
  5. director at St Thomas's choir school in
  6. Leipzig. Bach was a master of counterpoint,
  7. and his music epitomizes the Baroque
  8. polyphonic style. His orchestral music
  9. includes the six Brandenburg Concertos, other
  10. concertos for clavier and violin, and four
  11. orchestral suites. Bach's keyboard music, for
  12. clavier and organ, his fugues, and his choral
  13. music are of equal importance. He also wrote
  14. chamber music and songs. Born at Eisenach,
  15. Bach came from a distinguished musical
  16. family. At 15 he became a chorister at
  17. Luneburg, and at 19 he was organist at
  18. Arnstadt. He married twice and had over 20
  19. children (although several died in infancy).
  20. His second wife, Anna Magdalena Wulkens, was
  21. a soprano; she also acted as his amanuensis
  22. when his sight failed in later years. Bach's
  23. sacred music includes 200 church cantatas,
  24. the Easter and Christmas oratorios, the two
  25. great Passions, of St Matthew and St John,
  26. and the Mass in B minor. His keyboard music
  27. includes a collection of 48 preludes and
  28. fugues known as the Well-Tempered Clavier,
  29. the Goldberg Variations, and the Italian
  30. Concerto. Of his organ music the finest
  31. examples are the chorale preludes. Two works
  32. written in his later years illustrate the
  33. principles and potential of his polyphonic
  34. art - the Musical Offering and The Art of
  35. Fugue.
